Syndicated African American Cartoonst Jerry Craft

Have you ever wanted to publish a book but didn't know how? I've helped people just like you publish over 2 dozen books! Unlike most illustrators, the price that we agree on includes everything from the pictures, editing, proofreading and design, to getting an ISBN number and a bar code. Now BEFORE you contact me, here are a few guidelines / requests. The first is that this info is for folks who want to publish their books themselves, as opposed to going through a publisher like Disney or Random House.

1) In order to illustrate your book, I HAVE to like the story. Also, it has to be something that I can show my kids, so no smut.

2) Most children's picture books are either 24 or 32 pages. They tend to go in multiples of 4 pages.

3) What are your needs? ... Illustrations; writing; design; editing; everything plus ISBN? Do you have a printer? If not, I can connect you..

4) Be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars. You cannot get what I do for $100.

4) Once I read your story, I will come up with a style that I feel suits your book best. Playful, serious... You can check out
the My Portfolio page to see samples of my work.

5) The process will take a few months, so if I start it in November, unfortunately, you won't be able to sell it for Christmas.

6) My payments are broken down into thirds. The first is to start. I don't do any work, besides read your story, until payment has been made. The next payment is due AFTER you approve all of my sketches. Once approved, I will begin the finished drawings. Once the finished drawings are done, any changes will incur an extra charge. The last payment is due before the files get sent to the printer.

7) You retain the rights to the story; I retain the rights to the artwork. What that means is, in addition to using my art for your book, you will also be able to use my art for your website and business cards ... BUT, you can not use it for anything else that will generate any additional income until we have negotiated a fair price. All this means is that if you are paying for me to illustrate your book then plan to sell a CD or T-Shirts, we need to discuss this BEFORE you produce them. Or if Disney want to offer you a million dollars to make a cartoon version of your book, then this is to protect me from being left out. But I will NEVER block an opportunity for you.

8) When I travel to book fairs, I take all the books I've done with me to help promote them. So I always order books to keep them in stock. But I will never sell your book at any event that you attend or directly compete with you.
